Last 2013, Blue Sky Studios and Fox Animation released a wonderful movie directed by Chris Wedge based on William Joyce’s The Leaf Men and The Brave Good Bugs. It was a star studded cast starting with Amanda Seyfreid (Mean Girls, Dear John), Josh Hutcherson (The Hunger Games trilogy, Journey series) and Colin Farrell (Horrible Bosses, Total Recall). It also casts Beyonce Knowles, Pitbull and many more.
The movie centers on a 17-Year Old Mary Katherine or M.K. returns to her eccentric scientist father’s home, but his all-consuming quest to discover a tiny civilization in the neighboring forest drives them apart. However, M.K. soon finds herself shrunken down by Queen Tara of that forest who was mortally wounded by the putrefying Boggans, and charged to deliver a pod bearing the new Queen to safety. Together with a veteran Leafman warrior, two goofy mollusks and a young maverick, M.K. agrees to help. As the villainous Boggan leader, Mandrake closes in, M.K. and her new friends must draw on the best of themselves together and discover what they have to save their world. The movie itself is wonderful to look at becuase of its refreshing world and environment. It gains your attention and is very good and amazing to look at. The animation is very wonderful though some mistakes could be corrected. The story is nice though you could really predict what events might come after the other. Another thing about the story is the complication. Its really easy for kids to identify the characters and know the story but keeping all these factors in their mind, its pretty hard.
Characters on the movie were great and packed with amazing design. Speaking of its design, its design is really unique and if you’d compare it to the character design of other film studios, its pretty darn different. I cant say its ugly but i think its a trademark that separates Blue Sky from its competitors. The characters were filled with spirit and different traits that separates one from the other.
Another great thing about this movie is the environment and settings created. Besides of the greenery the trees and plants give, another factor of why this is good looking is the structural forms of each rocks, trees and plants. The last factor is the lighting. The lighting in this scene and mostly all forest scenes in the movie were delightful and great for the eye. The combination they used complemented with each other and all of the other factors in the movie.
As a summary of this review, I can say that Epic was a great movie combining the animation, character design, effects, story and music. But combining these could be a head ache which is the downside of this movie. But overall, I can say that this is a nice movie the whole family could watch and enjoy but be warned of head aches this movie might cost.
