[Review] Home – ‘Seriously, Its Cute!’

Dreamworks Animation/Pacific Data Images has really put themselves into risking their company’s future with its present movies losing in the box office forcing it to make some actions including the restructing of its lineup. Supposedly released last year (its spot was replaced with Dreamworks’ Penguins of Madagascar), Home is the only movie of Dreamworks Animation (the studio that usually releases 2-3 movies per year) for this year. So if you’re a DWA fan, watch this movie!!

When Oh, a loveable misfit from another planet, lands on Earth and finds himself on the run from his own people, he forms an unlikely friendship with an adventurous girl named Tip who is on a quest of her own. Through a series of comic adventures with Tip, Oh comes to understand that being different and making mistakes is all part of being human. And while he changes her planet and she changes his world, they discover the true meaning of the word HOME.

The movie starts with the Boovs trying to find a safe place to keep themselves away from the Gorgs, another life form which is their enemy due to some mishaps done by Captain Smek, more to that later. Then, they find Earth and takes over in the most peaceful way they could think of. They evacuated all of the humans to Australia, building them super compressed villages where all of the people of the world should fit in. Then, all of the Boovs move in to the human houses (condominiums, houses, apartments) and gets rid of anything they think is very unuseful using their own technologies. Oh, a misfit tries to befriend other Boovs but they always try to stay away from Oh as he is very clumsy. Gratuity Tucci or Tip for short is a girl (probably the only human left in New York) hiding in their apartment watching the memories she and her mom shared. She’s mad at Boovs as they separated her and her mom. She leaves their home as a Boov is going to live in their apartment. She grabs her cat and a present she’s to give her mom as a Christmas present before the Boovs took over.

Tip’s cat (I didnt had the chance to know his/her name though, shame..)

Meanwhile, Oh tries to make a Housewarming Party and invited his neighbors and his best friend, Kyle. But accidentally, he sends the invitation to all (including the Gorgs’ commander) putting the lives of his fellow Boovs to risk.

Boovs as they receive Oh’s Housewarming Party electronic invitation.

The Boovs then released their cops to search for Oh and to catch him. Captain Smek then discovers about this and puts Kyle in charge of finding Oh’s password to cancel the message as it is still being sent to the Gorgs’ commander. Oh hides himself from the other Boovs in a convenience store where Tip also hides as she thinks she is the one being searched for by the Boovs. She stops there to pack herself some foods for her trip in searching for her mom. Oh and Tip sees each other cause Tip to panic and throws Oh to the refrigerator. They then began their journey to Paris where the Boov headquarters is where they can locate Tip’s mother with Oh modifying Tip’s car and setting a quest to find ‘My Mom’ as Oh calls it. But Oh wants to go to Antartica where no Boov can find him. He tried to reroute their trip many times causing a conflict between him and Tip. In their journey to Paris, they discovered each kind’s difference and similarities.

They finally located Tip’s mom and Oh finally stopped the message but still, the Gorgs are still headed for Earth. On their way to Australia, the Boovs are also headed there for transport to leave the planet as the Gorgs will destroy it once they get there. In Australia, instead of Oh helping Tip, he decides to be with the other Boovs to leave the planet. He becomes their leader and they live happily ever after. I know, I didn’t told you the whole story. Telling it wholly will spoil you entirely.. 😉

The movie is wonderfully animated. Every moment is amazing. Everything was well done. The characters did well in interacting with each other and so on. The movie was accompanied in it with some of Rihanna’s songs written for the movie. They were amazing songs.

One of the best moments in the film.

The film was good and amazing in the animation. But its story is what is lacking. The story was not well delivered and there are some questions left in my mind after watching the movie. There are moments where Oh’s jokes didnt made the audience laugh which made it kinda awkward because in the screen Oh made a joke and Tip laughs but no one in the audience laughed. So that’s a bit of a let down eh Dreamworks?

But nonetheless, the movie is still good. Its just not as good as How To Train Your Dragon or The Croods. But for the children, I think this is an unforgettable experience. If I was to rate this movie from 1 to 10, I’d give it a 6.5.

“It delivers the animation in the most amazing ways and casts a star studded ensemble but the story is what this movie lacks so bad. ”
